Val d'Anniviers general overview Apart from a few British mountaineers in the 1860s, attracted by the magnificent summits (such as the Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Obergabelhorn and Dent Blanche) in the chain known as the "Imperial Crown" of the Alps, tourism did not really take off in the Val d'Anniviers until the end of the fifties. The great advantage of this rather late development was that it helped to avoid the mistakes which are made only too often on a building level as well as causing damage to nature and the landscape. The region was certainly developed but the development was well thought out and, although it was modern, authenticity was a top priority as well as respect for the traditional values of ancestors who never took any decision without applying their healthy, benificial mountaineers' logic, for which they should be warmly thanked. For those who like facts and figures, the Val d'Anniviers is 5 resorts (Grimentz, Zinal, Vercorin, St.-Luc and Chandolin) and around a dozen small villages and hamlets of which the most important are Vissoie, Ayer, St.-Jean, Mayoux, Pinsec, Mottec and Niouc. These villages also have hotels, boarding houses, holiday flats and lodging for groups for those who are looking for tranquility outside the major resorts but with proximity to all they have to offer. |
