Horu is Curling in Zermatt
Did you know that the big tourney in Zermatt in January is called the Horu? I wonder where they came up with that name. Anyway, did you know that it is curling? Yes, yes the Canadian sport. Whoops wait a minnit, didn't the Swiss beat the Canadians at some big tourney recently? Yep, they did. Was it the olympics? Anybody know? Anyway the Horu which will attract upwards of 64 teams will be held from the 14th to the 17th of January in 2010. at the natural ice rink.

Need help with upcoming ski holiday - where to stay and ski
I will be travelling with my neice and nephews ages 16 to 24 on a ski holiday. We plan to travel from Boston in February 2010. We would like to ski in Zermatt, St Moritz and possibly Verbier. They are all expert skiers and racers and will enjoy skiing backcountry.
Suggestions appreciated. The older ones will want to enjoy a night life - I will be in bed asleep.
Thank you.

Zermatt Matterhorn Golf
In the village of Randa, a short train or Car ride from Zermatt, the Matterhorn resort, lies a new, John Chilver Stainer designed golf course. Golfing in Zermatt is a relatively new opportunity and, although the course features just 9-holes, it is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. The Zermatt golf club is located on the right side of the road (going down from Zermatt?) between Visp and Tasch, and not too far from the village of Randa. Open from April to October (weather permitting) the Matterhorn golf club is a great reason to visit Zermatt during those periods. Although skiing is a year-round pursuit in Zermatt, Golf now too offers yet another major sport for Zermatt and the region. The Matterhorn Club is 1400 meters above sea level and has been open for just a couple of years. He course is laid out on both sides of the river Vispa and offers a view of the Matterhorn and some of the best and immediate mountains in Switzerland. More information can be found at www.golfclubmatterhorn.ch.

Switzerland Skiing is great
Do you know hat Switzerland possibly offers the best skiing in Europe. Yes I have skied many Swiss resorts and I must confess I have never skied a bad one. I mean almost everyone knows Zermatt, St. Moritz and Davos but how many are familiar with say, Saas Almagell or Chateaux D' Oex? They too are great and what about Verbier or the Jungfrau Region? If you are tired of them you are tired of skiing to paraphrase an old saying. Give Switzerland a good look see if you are contemplating your next ski holiday, you won,t be sorry.

Stars in Jungfrau Region
With Kylie Minogue starring in Ischgl in Austria and Joe Cocker and Uriah Heep headlining the act on the Kleine Scheidegg in Switzerland's Jungfrau Region what’s the ski world coming to? After all are Europe’s best and highest mountains for winter sports or major star concerts? The answer for the past 12 years in the Jungfrau Region has been both. This year,on Saturday, April 4th the distinctive voice of Joe Cocker and the equally talented rock band Uriah Heep will be performing. They will be ably backed by a number of Swiss groups. For viewers unfamiliar with the resorts in the Jungfrau Region, they are: Interlaken, Grindelwald, Latuerbrunnen, Murren, Wengen, Kleine Scheidegg and a few others. The railways of the Jungfrau Region organizes the affair, and tickets including accommodation, ski passes and concert admission can be found at www.interlaken.ch.

Davos Economic Forum
So this is the most important of all of the Davos Economic Fourms eh? What were all the rest then, eye candy? I see CNN is sending that bastion of consertivism Mr. Quest. And guess what? He does not like the travel; after all it took him more than 7 hours to reach the ski resort by first class train. Gee what a drag, we should all be so lucky. So they got Putin from Russia and Brown from the UK and who from the USA? Anyhow get all the info at www.weforum.org. And you can see all of the goings on (well most of them anyway) from the comfort of your own home at the following addresses;

Zermatt street saga
In Zermat Switzerland both visitors and locals demand snowy streets. Whaddya make of that? Most folks want their streets squeaky clean during the winter months. Prevents slippin' and slidin' you know. However this is not the case in the Matterhorn dominated resort of Zermatt. It seems that Zermatt's powers that be cleaned the entire car-free Zermatt pedistrian area in order to prevent the above slides and their results; falls and civil suits. However this agressive cleaning of the streets, no matter how good the result (no falls no legal worries)did not sit well with either tourists or locals. They want snow-covered walkways in the car-free village. Seems all concerned prefer the magical Matterhorn resort snow covered. Fall anyone?

Salomon and Ski Freshtracks team up to offer a unique freeski experience Adventure skiing operator Ski Freshtracks have teamed up with freeski specialists Salomon for an exciting week of freeskiing in the leading off-piste resort of Andermatt, Switzerland. For the first ever time, skiers are being invited to discover the powder of Andermatt with UIAGM mountain guide Nigel Shepherd and ski with freeski legend & Salomon freeski team captain Pat Sharples. There will also be a Salomon rep armed with a full test pool of the very latest freeride and freestyle skis for everybody to test. Zermatt/St. Moritz train
Ah the lickety split express traain, the Glacier Express, takes you from Zermatt to St. Moritz in around 8 hours. Ah but what a slow boat to China. You'll see older than the hills villages, bridges, the Oberalp pass and much more. You will not see the tunnels (dark you know). In any event after Zermatt skiing or St Moritz "hob nobbing" (read skiing and such) what a way to top off your holiday.

Matterhorn first climbers
The Matterhorn was one of the last of the main Alpine mountains to be ascended. The first serious attempts began around 1857, mostly from the Italian side. However, on July 14, 1865, in what is considered the last ascent of the golden age of alpinism, the party of Edward Whymper, Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Douglas, Douglas Robert Hadow, Michel Croz and the two Peter Taugwalders (father and son) was able to reach the summit by an ascent of the Hörnli ridge in Switzerland. Upon descent, Hadow, Croz, Hudson and Douglas fell to their deaths on the Matterhorn Glacier, and all but Douglas (whose body was never found) are buried in the Zermatt churchyard. Matterhorn Cervinia
The Matterhorn is probably the highest free standing mountain in Europe. Er, what does free standing mean? Anyway it is shared by the Italian, Aosta Valley resort of Cervinia and the Swiss resort of Zermatt. Cervinia offers 150km of skiing whilst Zermatt offers 200. Together, 350. The food is great in Cervinia and the Italian atmosphere unforgetabe.
