Hiking in Winter?
Sure you can! For once everything is snowed in throughout the Engadine, the valley is shrouded in even deeper peace and quiet. You will become aware of this at the latest, when the creaking sound of the snow at every one of your steps strikes you as loud.

You will find yourself transported to a wintery fairy land across some 94 miles (150 km) of well kept hiking trails.

Take the time to discover the romantically snow covered philosophers' trail up on the plateau of Muottas Muragl. Your hike will be facilitated by markers for orientation which also document the stages of occidental thinking from Socrates to Sartre. Open space, depth of perspective and tranquility are the true luxuries of our time. Here you may indulge yourself to the fullest in the ageless aboundance of these values.

In winter the average temperature lies around -9° C. During the night, temperatures can easily drop below -20° C. However, because of the dry air (57% humidity in February on average), it does not feel much colder than -6° C would in areas where the humidity is higher.

Suggestions for Hikers

Schellen Ursli Trail

The trail leads from St. Moritz-Dorf, passing the Heidi hut, to Hotel Salastrains. It covers a distance of approximately one mile (1.5 km) and the expected time for a leisurely hike is 45 minutes.

Philosophers' Trail
Along the romantic and quiet trail crossing the plateau of Muottas Muragl you will discover the wisdom of occidental thinkers from Socrates to Sartre as you read their quotes from pannels gracing the unrivalled landscape.

Segantini Trail
Start at the hotel Soldanella, then follow the forest trail to the renovated Segantini Museum and beyond towards Suvretta. Bordering the trail, six information boards are outlining the life of the world famous painter Giovanni Segantini.

Around the Lake of St. Moritz
A very special hike, as the frozen lake of St. Moritz stays within your field of view. Just think of how strong the layer of ice has to be in order to withstand horse races, polo parties, grandstands and hundreds of spectators at one time.

Important Guidelines for Hikers

* Please mind the warning signals of the avalanche service.
* Trails accross the lakes: Access to these trails is allowed only once they have been prepared and officially marked red. Depending on the weather, the open season for these trails usually lasts from mid January to the beginning of April. The trails across the lakes may be temporarily closed off due to heavy snow or sudden rises in temperature.
* Please do not litter.
* Dogs must be kept on a leash.
* Please stay on the trail, as leaving it would distrub the local wildlife.
* Please use the trails which are marked red. Yellow markings indicate cross-country skiing and skating trails.
