Saas Fee: The skiing overview

The skiing begins at the glacier area just below the Feekopf. This is the main summer ski area, and also where you can sit in the resort's fabulous revolving restaurant and enjoy a 365 degree panorama.

Although the summer skiing is extensive, it is only part of the action during the warm season. The resort has a totally different personality in summer, and there are a large number of activities and other sporting pursuits to, pursue. We won't describe them all here, suffice it to say that in our many visits to Saas Fee in summer we've seen everything except golfing and beach lounging.

However Saas Fee in winter is what we highlight in this article. The place is a good skier's dream. Not & SHY; we hasten to add & SHY; that Saas Fee is not a good destination for beginners, it does have some splendid playground space for those. For the most part though, it is our considered opinion that the more experienced skier will enjoy the heck out of Saas Fee.

Here's what they can look forward to. Guaranteed snow on the Felskin glacier which, at an altitude of just over 3,000 m, is big enough and interesting enough to satisfy most skiers. Skiing on the Langfluh, also to be found in this area, is extensive and challenging. Then, just a little lower at around the 2,500 m altitude, the Spielboden provides another extensive selection of relatively demanding skiing.

There is a half pipe for snowboarders located close to the panorama place, at an altitude of 3,200 m. New as well is the T-bar at the Langfluh glacier which replaces the diesel train that served skiers until now. Less experienced or less confident skiers can find some suitable slopes down from the glacier too.

First timers will find some nice little slopes at village level. Besides the obvious benefits from staying close to "terra firma", there are a number of nice little bars in the hotels nearby. On the other side of town, the ski area known as the Hannig offers some gentle skiing to an altitude of 2,500 m. This will do quite nicely once you get enough confidence to try your luck farther afield.
