Martigny, Switzerland the road to alpine skiing.
So
if the Swiss City of Martigny is not a ski resort, what then is
it doing being featured on the website dedicated to skiing in
Switzerland? Because dear visitor Martingny is a good place to
ski out of, if you get my drift.
Martigny is, in fact, linked by rail and
road to a variety of well know ski resorts both in Switzerland
and France. Yes I did say France. There is, for example a great
train ride from Martigny in Switzerland, over the Forclaz pass
to Chamonix in France. Great huh? Make sure you have the
schedule down though, if your goodies are in Martigny you don’t
want to be spending the night in Chamonix.
Want to ski Verbier? Just hop on the bus,
Gus. The Post bus will take you surely, comfortably and safely
to your day’s skiing in fabulous Verbier and returns you in time
for dinner. From the train station in Martigny you can access
many ski resorts in the canton Valias. This includes the resorts
on the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil, Crans Montana, some
of the Alpes Vaudioses and even Zermatt if you get up early
enough. Whaddya think of that?
Another reason for Martigny as a base is
availability and accessibility. The city is on the main train
line between Geneva and ski land and is also easy enough to
reach form Zurich. In addition one is likely to find a vacancy
in Martigny when most all else fails. In ultra high season for
example. There’s accommodation of all standards and there are
good places to eat. Night life and après ski though do not seem
to be prevalent. Make your own.
Summertime in Martigny is a different matter though. Besides
being a home for various arts, Martigny offers a wide array of
sports activities in and around the Swiss city. Bowling, tennis,
biking walking, swimming and more are all available.
