In and around
Engelberg are various sights, worth to take your time and have a look at
it. Please find following opportunities:
Show
Cheese Factory
Unique cheese creation...Visit Switzerland`s only show cheese factory within a monastery. Cheese
has been made in Engelberg since the 12th Century. By the 16th Century,
the monastery had already exported hundreds of cheeses abroad. Today, the
show cheese factory continues this tradition, producing different kinds of
cheese from the fresh alpine milk of Engelberg. You can see, live through
out the day, cheese being made by hand. Four containers are moved through
a series of production stages, resulting in the uniquely formed and
gourmet tasting “Engelberger Klosterglocke”. “Engelberger Klosterkไse”
and “A bite of Switzerland” are additional speciality cheeses made at
the monastery.
Valley
Museum
The Engelberg Talmuseum has been set up in the „Wappenhaus“ which was
built in 1786/87. The visitor will be given an insight into the history an
life of the high Alpine valleys. As Born out by findings, the passes that
surround the Engelberg were being used over 6000 years ago. The village of
Engelberg came into being with the founding of the Monastery in 1120.
The pictures and documents exhibited bring to life the history of the
valley community and its Monastery and the struggle of the Abbot’s
subjects for their independence. Since the middle of the 19th century the
one-time peaceful mountain valley has become a health resort of world
renown. Winter sports stared being practised in Engelberg after the turn
of the century.
Take a tour of the Engelberg Talmuseum and discover the history of a
valley community which today, though an exclave, constitutes the seventh
municipality of the Canton of Obwald.
