Awright already! So I have spent half of my life in the European Alps and I did not know that the Swiss city of Visp had its own ski areas. Yes areas, plural. In fact the area is billed as nothing less than “all around Visp”.
Imagine this smallish Valais city with a train station almost in the heart of town that can whisk you to such famous names as Zermatt and Saas Fee, with a perfectly good ski area of its own. Go figure!
According to Valais Tourism there are no less than 24 original Valais villages serving 5 ski areas.
The official tourism department goes on to say that some of these ski areas are in the mountains and some in the valleys. We are assuming here that those in the valleys are of the cross-country variety. For those looking for a bit of downhill ski or snowboard action this is a very good option.
Want to ski Verbier? Just hop on the bus,
Gus. The Post bus will take you surely, comfortably and safely
to your day’s skiing in fabulous Verbier and returns you in time
for dinner. From the train station in Martigny you can access
many ski resorts in the canton Valias. This includes the resorts
on the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil, Crans Montana, some
of the Alpes Vaudioses and even Zermatt if you get up early
enough. Whaddya think of that?
There’s a host of other action on tap as well, with the afore mentioned cross country trails, tobogganing, an indoor ice rink and outdoor rinks in some of the smaller villages. Try it out please and let us know what you think.
With close to 300 hotels in the region, as well as apartments, bed and breakfasts and even haystacks to sleep in you should be able to find accommodation in the highest of seasons.
This is true especially if you want to ski some of the better-known areas but cannot find accommodation. The Visp region for others that may not be too familiar with it comprises the region betweek Leukerbad, Saas Fee, the Aletch Glacier and Zermatt. All told in the region there are 28 ski lifts and cable cars that climb to altitudes of 2.500 plus, meters. The region for skiing is broken into two distinct parts, the Augstbord region and the lower Visp valley. Each has its own variety and a free ski bus connects them.ion one is likely to find a vacancy
in Martigny when most all else fails. In ultra high season for
example. There’s accommodation of all standards and there are
good places to eat. Night life and après ski though do not seem
to be prevalent. Make your own.
Summertime in Martigny is a different matter though. Besides
being a home for various arts, Martigny offers a wide array of
sports activities in and around the Swiss city. Bowling, tennis,
biking walking, swimming and more are all available.
